Monday 13 August 1973 Aviaco Caravelle 10R EC-BIC c/n 225
DSP Flight AO116 from Madrid (MAD) to La Coruna (LCG) with 6 crew and 79 passengers. The crew did several attempts to land on La Coruna shrouded in fog. On the last attempt it struck eucalyptus trees and crashed. Th conditions at that moment were below minima. Probably the crew was looking outside to see the ground and then failed to monitor the altitude at the altimeter. There was an option to land at Santiago apt in better weather conditions but for unknown reason this was not opted for. As the flight took only 50 minutes from Madrid, was it not known that the weather conditions at La Coruna were below minima when the aircraft took of ? The weather along the route was ideal, so could be the crew took off in the assumption the weather in La Coruna was also ideal ? And for that reason had no pre-set plan to divert to Santiago ?
In the accident report is only given meteorological information form 09:00 hr, but does not give information regarding weather conditions at 08:00 hrs before the flight took off. Was the crew aware of weather condition at La Coruna before take off ? I wonder if the flight plan has been checked on this ? Looks to me bad preparation of the flight, if they took off with conditions below minima at La Coruna, they should have had a plan B for diversion ?
