ISP Flight SQ006 from Taipei (TPE) to Los Angeles (LAX) with 20 crew and 159 passengers. At departing TPE the crew took the wrong runway, 5R which was closed for construction. The should have used 5L. The weather at the moment was very poor, with gusts of wind and heavy rainfall, due to typhoon “Xiang Sane” which was nearby. At the take-off run the aircraft struck construction equipment, and broke up. First flight : 1997. Airframe hrs : 18459 cycles : 2274 engines : PW4056. 83 people died in the crash.

Fatal storm – At least 65 passengers of a Singapore Airlines flight died yesterday when the plane crashed in bad weather at Taipei airport shortly after takeoff. Seventy passengers are in hospitals. A number of passengers are still missing.
