weight and performance calculations for the Nieuport 27C.1
Flying ace Tenente Gastone Novelli, Novara Lancers regiment, squadra Baracca posing for a Nieuport 27
Nieuport 27C.1
role : advanced trainer
importance : ***
first flight : operational : October 1917
country : France
design : Gustave Delage
production : 120 aircraft
general information :
The Nieuport 27C.1 was inferior to the contemporary SPAD fighters.
For this reason it was only purchased by the Americans who used it as a advanced trainer. It was a further development of the Nieuport 17 and 24. It differed from the 24 for its tailplanes. As a trainer, the 130 hp engine was usually replaced by a 120 hp Le Rhone engine. Some aircraft also had an additional Lewis machine gun on the top plane.
A few were used by the French at the front. The most famous flyer of the 27 was Charles Nungesser.
