Ilyushin Il-62 accident report

First Ilyushin IL-62 prototype |  passenger jetaircraft | CCCP-06156

The prototype CCCP-06156 crashed on February 25, 1965 during a MTOW test flight.

Couldn't gain altitude after take-off and crashed, killing 10 of the 17 on board.

On August 14, 1972, Interflug's Il-62 DM-SEA c/n 00702 crashed near Konigs Wusterhausen. Flight from Berlin-Schonefeld (SXF) to Burgas (BOJ), Bulgaria, with DDR-Black Sea tourists. When it had climbed to 8900m 13 min. after TO, the crew reports problems with the ailerons. Crew decides to return immediately. A hot air tube in the tail section had caused electrical cables to melt, after which a short circuit occurred and a fire broke out. Soon after, the aircraft becomes uncontrollable. Crew did not know that there was a fire otherwise they would have tried to land the plane faster. Crashed 30 min after TO in field 15km SE of Berlin. All 148 passengers and 8 crew members are killed. Ilyushin Il-62 in flight | CCCP-86671 | Aeroflot Aeroflot's Il-62 CCCP-86671 c/n 70301 crashed, near the village of Ozeretskoye in Russia, 1km east of lake Nerskoye on October 13, 1972, , during the third approach in bad weather 6km east of Moscow-Sheremetyevo airport. Flight from Paris via Leningrad (LED) to Moscow (SVO) with 164 passengers and 10 crew members. All were killed. The ILS system did not work that night. 1st flight : 1967 Location : +-25m 56°04'50.18"N 37°24'38.57"E

On August 20, 1975, the Il-62 OK-DBF "Brno Trade Fair" of the CSA crashed near Damascus. Operated Flight 540 from Prague (PRG) to Damascus (DAM) with 117 passengers and 11 crew members. Flies during approach of RW23R in good weather against the ground, 17 km NE from Damascus airport at 650m altitude on the edge of dry lake Uteibe. All 126 passengers were killed. c/n 31502, first flight : 1973. Crew probably confused QNH with QFE. Location -+ 1km 33°31'44"N 36°40'43"E

On March 14, 1980, the Il-62 SP-LAA "Kopernik" c/n 11004 of the LOT crashed near Warsaw. There are 87 deaths. On the approach to RW15 of Warsaw int'l apt. (WAW), after a 7257km flight from New York, the crew has problems with the landing gear, which does not want to lock. They decide to make a re-start. However, if they increase power, engine No.2 breaks into pieces, damaging control cables. The aircraft becomes uncontrollable and dives into the ground, killing all 77 passengers and 10 crew members. Cause metal fatigue in the turbine disk of engine no.2. first flight : 1971 Location : +-50m 52°11'06.24"N 20°56'56.56"E
